The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took

and hid in measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. ~ Matthew 13:33

I believe in bread alone.

I believe in bread that makes me weep.

       Primordial metabolic miracle,

            Wild, wonderful rambunctious Lactobacilli.

I believe in wheat, salt, leaven, and water

      Earth, Wind, Fire and Rain,

I believe in miracles; subliminal magic hidden in grain,

Sticky to shiny, tensile to pliable, ascending and falling,

             Rising and dying, returning…

I believe in Slow Rise. The seasons of bread are long and loving:

Growing, harvesting, grinding, mingling, kneading, fermenting,

Rounding, resting, shaping, proofing, scoring, baking, Savoring

“Measures of meal,”created, incarnated, crucified and risen;

The graceful baguette, the dubious batard, the delicate fougasse,

The fragrant foccocia., the rustic peasant boule….

Transformed wholeness, recycled mystery,

Authentic, aromatic, sumptuous, crackling, steamy, crusty mounds.

Everlasting echo, ancient memory of communion, com-pan-ion-ship,

Manna, sacred sustenance, kingdom of heaven.

I believe in Bread alone.
